Rock Society Newsletter April-May
Aloha hard rocking amigos of Leeds Rock Society!
Please ignore our previous message, we had a little accident with technology, don't worry, it's all sorted now.
First off before we crack onto the juicy club night we have in store for you, and that little sojourn to Hull your former masters planned (that’s the old committee), we’d like to recognise and salute, but not necessary bid farewell to the dedicated team, of hard working fools, erm we mean...those brave few who have guided the Leeds Rock Society in the past year. We’ll be hard pressed to up their considerable ante, but we hope to bring you all that much and more in the coming year!
We are delighted to detail...
- A Pirate Party at Subculture
- The Hull Invasion (aka a trip to Spiders)
-Gig opportunities for upcoming bands.
-Holidays (whey!!!)
Right first things first. PIRATES!!!!
---------PIRATE CLUB NIGHT---------
Yes, unfurl your sails, ready your wenches (or don your wench outfits), uncork the rum and prepare for boarding, as THIS Wednesday on the 22nd of April we’ll be holding our final, end of year shindig at the Subculture. Which as you may have guessed or seen from the posters scattered around the university, is unsurprisingly pirate themed!
Here’s just a tantalising taste of what we have in store for you...
-PIRATE COCKTAILS! – The Subculture will have a selection of unique pirate themed cocktails on offer for the evening to tempt your taste buds.
-A DJ set performed by Rock of Ages very own Adam (the lovely gent that he is).
-Accept Decline a self confessed compilation of ‘a recovering emo, a metal Viking, a big old dad bassist and a peroxide Canadian warbler’ will be playing their unique mix of abrupt pop/punk vibe will be playing a set for us. Followed by Obsessive Compulsive a Gothic punk rock quartet who are returning to grace us with their presence once more.
Festivities kick off at 8pm and will be finishing at around 2am in the morning when we are ousted from the Subculture. Entry will be a paltry £2 (but £3 for those unlucky devils who aren’t members) before 9:45 where afterwards it shall be £3 for all you lovely people (which rises to £4 for non-members) so ensure that you arrive there early! Although not necessary, pirate costumes are optional, the committee will be making fools of ourselves, so why not join in!? However, the university insists that we provide a health and safety warning for any ninjas who wish to attend. You have been warned.
---------SPIDERS CLUB TRIP SATURDAY 2nd MAY-------------
The club trip is looming and we still have plenty of spaces available for those who are interested in joining our invasion of Hull. Why invade Hull you ask? Well...with three floors of rock music and a cocktail menu cheaper than Alex’s wardrobe (if you’ve seen his Wendy outfits you’ll understand), along with shots as cheap as 45p, why the hell not!? Tickets will come to the pitiful sum of £6 (for what you’re getting) and will be available to purchase in Old Bar between 12-2pm ALL this week and next. Come find us, and give us your money! We’ll be heading out from Leeds early Saturday evening and returning in the wee hours of Sunday morning, when we’ve managed to herd you all back onto the bus.
--------GIG OPPORTUNITIES--------
The kind-hearted (and frankly rather dashing) Paul Holiday, affectionately known as Doc, is looking for bands who would like to play The Primrose in April, May and June. For those unfamiliar with The Primrose it’s a very agreeable little venue situated on Meanwood Road, opposite the Jet garage. Full of those friendly types it’s a very nice place to play, especially for bands just starting out. So if any of you chaps and chapettes are interested you need to be popping off an e-mail to fringe2004man [at] hotmail [dot] com. Good? Good.
----------HOLIDAYS-----------
Finally, just to remind you all that during the summer the pub meets on Fridays will go on as normal, and of course so do Star, Rock of Ages and Wendy House. If you’re a member you still have a £1 discount, so make the most of it! Some of us will always be around.
Have fun!
Jo, Alex and Chris.
