Rocksoc Newsletter; Fun, Firsts and Freshers

Greetings and salutations from the RockSoc committee

First of all the committee would like to say a massive welcome to all those poor little freshers we ensnared during the last week or so in our RockSoc net, followed swiftly by an equally large welcome back to all those old, embittered members who we love ever so much, that have returned once more to university life (or not as the case may be...but let’s not go thinking about growing up and having to get one of these so-called “jobs”).
This year we intend to kick start the new semester with a whole host of events, including our regular meetings at the Packhorse, a Rock vs. Punk night in the Old Bar and of course we cannot be forgetting our very first club night RockSoc and Two Smoking Barrels at the good old Subculture and there’s a free buffet beforehand!!! See, that’s how much we love you...but we’re not going to go on about the sausage rolls just quite yet.

---PACKHORSE PUB MEET---
First off for all the freshers we’ll be holding our regular pub meet at the Packhorse this Friday, starting at 20:30 and going on until later, after which we’ll be diverging to either go to F.U.E.L the new club night at the Leeds Met, which has replaced STAR. Remember its relatively cheap drinks, if its anything like what it used to be it will have one room dedicated to rock and metal (from Bon Jovi to Rammstein) whereas the other will cater more to those with a penchant for punk and ska. Failing that for those who don’t really fancy a trek into town, our glorious overlady, matriarch and all round lovely lass Jo (that’s the President in other words) will be having a shindig at her house after the Packhorse, for those who want to come along and gatecrash feel free! Although it’s not really gate-crashing, as you’ve all just been invited...but that’s semantics for you. For those who don’t know where the Packhorse is, it’s on Woodhouse Lane, opposite the Civil Engineering building, and just up the road from the Eldon, and down from the Library pub. There’s loads of take-aways nearby as well, and because the pub owners are lovely, they generally let us bring food in and take it up stairs, so long as we don’t make a mess.

---ROCK VS. PUNK ----
As for this Rock vs. Punk night however it’ll be held in the Old Bar on Monday evening, it’s mainly an informal event which consists of the Old Bar playing a medley of Rock and Punk music; however there will hopefully be some lovely folk from Punk Soc to meet and chat to. Don’t worry, they may be scary and eat kittens for breakfast...but we love them really. Honest.

---TWO SMOKING BARRELS CLUB NIGHT---
Last, but by no means least will be our very first club night of the year, RockSoc and Two Smoking Barrels at the Subculture in town on Wednesday the 30th of September. We’ll have an eclectic mix of music on offer for you that evening, with a variety of our more experienced DJ’s from the society playing a whole host of different genres for your enjoyment. “The Plan” in its current form is to gather outside the Parkinson steps at 19:00 (that’s in front of the big white building at the front of the university campus, the one with the massive tower), at this point your Committee will be there to guide you down to Carpe Diem (for all the freshers who don’t have a clue where it is, after all we’d almost feel guilty if we lost you and you ended up in Oceana by mistake). Once at Carpe there will be a free buffet on offer (did we mention the sausage rolls?) and relatively cheap drinks, as beer like Fosters and Theakstons is £1.25 whereas its £2.50 for double mixers like Sailor Jerries and Vodka, not to mention relatively cheap shots of sambucca. After we’ve stripped Carpe bare of its food, and we’re nice and merry we’ll head over to the Subculture and get the music playing until the early hours of the morning, since we’ll be finishing at around 2am...we hope you don’t have any lectures in the morning. Entry will be a paltry £3 for non-members, whilst those who have already signed up will be able to get in for £2, don’t worry if you haven’t signed up though, as we’ll have the forms so you can do so on the night if you’re enjoying yourself and get the discount then and there.
We hope to see as many of you as possible both on Friday in the Packhorse and especially at our club night, we’ll be keeping you regularly updated of things that are going off in the society, from gigs people are heading to, nights out, possible venues for club trips and of course any events that we are running officially.

For those who are coming to either the Packhorse or the club night here’s a couple of phone numbers in case you either get lost or need a bit of help getting there, feel free to give us a bell, we won’t mind.
Chris Terry – Treasurer – Embezzler (the bloke with the dodgy desert scarf at freshers’ fair) – 07817368875
Jo Bedingfield – El Presidenté (the girl with the appalling taste in hoodies a.k.a a Spinal Tap one who was also at freshers’ fair) – 07799662628
Alex Booth – Secretary (the sexy blonde one...) - 07933822310
Don’t forget all this information and more is available on the website (www.leedsrocksoc.co.uk) and our facebook group so get your arses in gear and get on there! Bitches!
In either case here’s to a great year, in which we’ll all enjoy the ride...no matter how bad the hangovers are going to be...

Have fun!
And lots of RockSoc love, although that generally consists of getting trashed and declaring undying friendship/love whilst slumped in a corner...
