This year the union is putting together a year book of sorts to celebrate the societies and what they've been doing this year. I've already had to come up with a paragraph about what we've been doing with ourselves but they want photos from our events too, so if you guys have any particular favourites that you'd like me to submit please let me know! Otherwise Megan is threatening to get them off facebook, and that could be very embarrassing
(No I will not submit the one of Stuart and "Michela"!!)
Stuart? has he done something wrong?
Id rather people didnt use any pictures of me
There's nothing right about that picture
That indescretion happened a few years ago
I don't mind any photos of me being used, regardless of how hideous they might be. Any events in particular you want photos from? I have a selection kicking about the computer, though most are in the Rocksoc folder on my facebook....
I have club night images if you want them.
Drew at Halloween HAS to be included!
You should also have ball and clubnight pictures.
Blah
Erm seeing as the yearbook is going to be used to advertise the rocksoc i dont think its in best tastes to have drews haloween entry in it (no matter how awesome it was)
Yeah we're going for the "non-controversial, look how much fun rocksoc is" look. Photos from club nights etc are exactly what we're looking for so put up any of your favourites and I'll send some through to the union
I think this one gives a good impression of Rock Soc life:

Also this one is bloody brilliant:
And I like this one! Give me 5 minutes with photoshop and I can get rid of the swears:
Err, we're Rock Soc, not the Christian Society! Any Christians that might be interested in joining Rock Soc are probably open-minded enough to appreciate Drew's photos in good humour.
And what about everyone else who reads it? This isn't a rocksoc year book or even a general interests one, every society is being asked to contribute.
Thanks Kat, those pics are great :)
People other than those who will be joining will see the photos though. We'd get in trouble most likely, and we don't want to offend anybody anyway.
Oh yeah, what Emma said
Wow, the union actually wants something from the rocksoc?
Why wouldn't they?
My point was we are usually ignored by them, but that may not have come across
I like the 'Kiss' picture.
And the picture below makes it look like we get quite a few people at our clubnights:

My point was we are usually ignored by them, but that may not have come across
No more so than other societies. Some appear to get more notice and support, but usually that's because they're bigger, or music/drama/charity based which means they have performances on campus and get more noticed. The union does not have anything against us!
On topic, all my rock soc related photos are on here in my album thingy. Take any that you think are nice. You probably won't, because I am a rubbish photographer!
Hunter, that pictures from 2006/2007 tho, are we allowed to use those if its a "year in rock soc"
Nobody will care, that exact same scene could have happened within this year. -Quantum physics et al.
Yeah I think when it comes to events we consistantly hold it doesn't matter if it was this year or last, just as long as they're good pictures that make us look like a great society ;)
Heehee, here's the picture without swearing, now Owen looks a bit of a dork, but it is at least family friendly

Anyone with eagle eyes will notice the 'shadow' of the prodigal finger over the poster in the background. And somebody might wonder why his hand looks deformed, but I'm sure no-one would care.
His hand does indeed look a bit deformed, it's the best I could do on the crappy freeware art program I've got on this laptop. In any case I'm sure there are lots of other photos we can use if that one looks a bit too freaky.
It still amuses me though. Everything is "A-OK, bro!" Ha.
Err, is anyone REALLY going to be offended by a middle finger? This is 21st Century Britain and we're students, for Pete's sake! I'm sure similar stuff will be in pictures by other societies.
Have you ever seen anyone swearing in any other university publications Tom? This is something being produced by the union and whilst I admit there are far more offensive things out there I'm going to assume their general policy on anything that COULD be seen as offensive like swearing or 'blasphemy' is just 'Don't.' Who wants the hassle of arguing with them if they do take an anti-swear stance? Of course if people wanted to check with them beforehand that could be done, or we could just not bother with that photo at all. That's probably the easiest thing.
I think you should have this one, as Miffy is currently society mascot

Plus she looks good in a hat :D
Have you ever seen anyone swearing in any other university publications Tom?
Have you sen the language they use in the Leeds student paper, its terrible...
...
...And they also swear too, usually unneccessarily.
Although the union would probably prefer 'clean' images as opposed to real images.
Kat, please get them to include your modified photo; it's really funny how he's doing the thumbs up now!
As for that clubnight pic from last year, it's hard to imagine that my hair was ever that long!!!!
Miffy isn't the mascot any more - it's now actually the Phallus Face mask I wore to last year's Ball
Since when? I thought Miffy was elected after the AGM last year. Sob....
That does sound familiar now that Stu mentioned it
I found the awards list from last year
The awards were as follows. I'm not giving a break down because I can't be botheredSociety Mascot - Miffy
Honoury Vice President - Stu's Mask
So I was right!
Ahhh my bad.
I guessed it was the society mascot, but apparently it's Vice President so even better....
...looked soooomuch better with the fingerman, and seriously, what rocker, or indeed any non-fundamentalist religious boff will be offended by owens middle finger. I reckon Megan would be fine with it!
Joelxxx
If you guys don't like the censored version we'll just send in a different picture, we don't have to use it. Even if Megan didn't mind the original I'm sure it still wouldn't end up in the year book itself, the editor will not want to cause offence and a lot of religious groups etc will also be adding to the journal so they have a lot of different peoples' views to consider.
To be quite honest I didn't really expect people to want to use the censored photo
It IS overly sensitive, and frankly a bit too Orwellian to really consider, so sorry if I was a bit snippy before. Above and beyond any other issues of offence or censorship it's really not something worth getting worked up about. I sort of just wanted to see if I could do it for my own entertainment, given more time I would have tried to make him do the devil horns as well!
i am offended by people who get offended. ha. id like to see nanny state and pc people deal with that!
yes i do realize that that means i offend myself but the extra qualifier i need to add to remove that recursion ("i am offended by people who get offended by things that are taboo for taboo's sake") is not nearly as snappy. and yes you could argue that i am making something up that is taboo and so is "for taboo's sake" but taboo generally implies it is widely seen as taboo within society (and even then you could define a society as a set of people who find getting offended offensive at which point it does become a taboo from that implication, however that society would be hard to create without imposing it artificially, at which point it would not be worth anyone's time or resources to create artificially, at which point it can be deemed to not exist OH MY GOD I'M ARGUING WITH MYSELF! I'm going to stop now.
But what's the middle finger got to do with religion?
Quiet easily, my sister whos amazingly religious, finds it amazingly offensive even saying crap or bloody. I know its due to it been an blasphemous and insulting god. but im unsure of what verse it connect to I will ask her if she can find the bible verse for me which backs it up.
I personally think God must have better things to worry about than simple hand gestures, regardless of their implications.
But if your realy religious, and God is major part of your life you'd think far differently. Catherine for example goes to church 3 or 4 times a week and Gods the most important thing in her life.
Tom why are you debating this so much? No-one here finds the image offensive but we've just got to appreciate that the year-book editor will mostly likely be concerned that other people might do, so I doubt he/she/it would appreciate us sending in photos of people swearing at the camera. We have lots of other photos we can use that don't have rude gestures, it's not a big deal.
Tom why are you debating this so much?
It's what I do; ask Rhiannon
But I think I've said enough now because 1) it's getting a bit too far off topic and 2) as a philosophy student, my views on religion are way too vast and complex for a public forum, so I should stop myself before I go crazy!
Well yes I know you like to argue your views in a situation where there is something to debate but this isn't really the case here. I think your incessant need to confront everything is starting to annoy people.
Ha ha ha ha, Tom isn't bad, I know some philosophy students who are far worse than him for that. Personally I don't see a problem with lively debate, I'd even go as far to say i actiavely encourage it. Why are people getting annoyed? He's not necessarily saying you're wrong he's just getting you to think about what you;re saying, if you can't defend your stance on issues then maybe you should start thinking about why...
I enjoy a debate if it's a topic worth discussing (and isn't going to cause everyone to get upset/angry at each other like some of our previous debates have....) but this isn't really a debatable situation because we're not discussing our own opinions on the use of swearing in public or on what religious people should/shouldn't be offended by. The point here is that the union will be worried about it, so we're not going to send potentially offensive photos in no matter what we think.
If Tom wants to debate the above issues he's welcome to do it in a different thread but it's not really much to do with people suggesting photos for me to put on our section of the union's year book so doesn't belong here. I think he knows that and is now just arguing for the sake of it, and it's dragging the thread further and further off topic with every post.
it's dragging the thread further and further off topic with every post.
Which is why I stopped when I did. Trust me, I can go on much further!
And Alex is right; if you find ME annoying, then I can draw you up a whole list of people's names that you would never want to talk to about this sort of thing!
hello emma just to let u know that u can use any of the photos i took of the ball for the year book theyre not that good but if u can salvage any then that would be cool. Also any pictures i take of the cross dress off can be used if thats not too late. hope you can get them off facebook if not i'll find another way to get them to you
Ok great, thanks Ceara
