No I'm not flaming against punks... But some of you may have seen this article in the Student Paper:

http://www.leedsstudent.org/ls1/comment/punk-is-dead-and-we-have-killed-...

Understandably, the punks are a bit upset, you can comment on the article at the bottom of the page if you were so inclined, if enough people complain perhaps the paper will issue a formal apology. This would be brilliant, and extremely un-punk. But since I think there are a lot of catch 22s going on with a punk supporter writing a probably quite carefully drafted article in a pretty tame institution of the Leeds student... I think we would ignore that.

I think the issue basically is, that this guy has chosen to complain about a cultural movement by focusing his attack on a social society which is about punk MUSIC. They're not there to be revolutionaries any more than we are. That's why we've got Revolution Soc.

Lame. I spent ages sculpting a perfectly patronising comment and it doesn't even post it on the page, they seem to disappear into the ether.

Boo! What's wrong with people joining together to like what they like? And in a place as vast as a university (and at a time when punk is not as popular as it used to be, sob) you need some sort of organisation so you can meet like minded individuals. It might not be the way it was done in the 70s, but it doesn't make it bad.

There is no punk society here at UCLan, nor a real punk night in Preston (that I know of), and as such I haven't been able to meet that many people who like what I like (Rock Society is overrun by metalheads, so not a lot of chance there, although there's a few people Smiling).

It wouldn't let me put anything underneath. Maybe they're scared of the bad publicity they must be getting. So I sent my little rant to the editor. I mean, my god, if you're going to write about how the punksoc are lacking in anti-establishmentism, do not quote Jonny Rotten to be the figurehead for it. I mean, for pete's sake the Sex Pistols were manufactured band, complete sell outs. They even wore Vivian Westwood clothes.

Still, what can you expect from the Student paper? If anything alternative makes it into there it's only to be slagged off. Narrow minded dickweeds.

You mean, the guy who did an advert for butter is lacking in anti-establishmentism??? How can that be?

On a similar subject, what's Iggy Pop doing in an advert?

But yeah, just because people listen to a certain type of music doesn't mean they'll have certain political views or even dress in a certain way. There are no set rules to how a person should act based on the music they like, as that would be spectacularly un-punk.

The political views associated with punk are from the punk movement and not punk music.
The movement is dead.
It has been dead for decades.
And what killed it was time.

Punk died the day Bill Grundy taunted them and they fell for it . . .

Post-punk is where all the fun was!! Laughing out loud

i was there, front fucking row. he was a moron
the punk review...are you all going to listen to a guy who obviously shops at banana republic and wore a pink (salmon) t-shirt for his picture.
The guy reeks of moron
He looks like a sorry excuse for a student too, with his 'im such a boner' hair cut and doe like 'in the headlights' eyes
It would be me behind the wheel, smearing his self assuming face across my cars front bumper as i drove over him, his artical and all he stands for
and i dont even like punk

I'm not listening to him. I'm complaining to his superiors to make sure we actually have a voice and let them know that their being narrow-minded.
The New Years party reviews were the same. It said something like the Cockpit was for 14 year olds with too much eye-liner and that Rock of Ages was for unwashed men with huge beards. And that the music was terrible. Obviously these reviews were made by someone with varied musical and social experience and unbiased views.....

Apart from the bit about the music being terrible (which it isn't), the man does have a point. Unless you go to Cockpit on a RoA saturday, in which case it's filled with all the people who get refused entry to RoA and fights kick off. Fun.
