This is my new thread for what you should/shouldnt eat japanese food wise

Ostrich Sashimi: Yea, raw giany chicken rocks

Kare Rice: Mild curry and rice is almost my staple diet

Tori Kara Age: Same as fired chicken but better.

On Rice: Chicken and Egg omelet on top of rice. Awsome

Oni Giri: Rice balls wrapped in seaweed. I believe seaweed is an aquired taste so ill get back to you on this

Ika Shashimi: Raw cut up squid. Not for the faint hearted. It was ok.

Anything else I eat that is interesting i will let you know. Any questions/requests are also welcome

I do drink Sake. Shochu is more popular over here for some reason though. Its like a cross between sake and paint stripper. Its pretty good.

I still cant get used to seaweed over here. It is very overpowering.

It is rather strong, seaweed. Speaking of Japanese food and drink I had a few Asahis in Cockpit tonight. I'm sure its the nicest lager in the world.

wasabi is indeed good, though maybe shouldn't be eaten per se.
Pickled ginger is nice.
They have Worcester sauce, only with the name written phonetically in Japanese, which makes me smile (I'm from Worcester).

In Japan Asahi seems to run everything. There isnt just the normal "Super Dry" beer either. There are like 20 different Asahis. Super dry is my fave. Check this out. You can get "Super Dry" in 2L cans. They even come with a handle :

Some have fish inside but generally they can have anything inside. I had an awful seaweed one the other day but the curry one is pretty good and so is the tuna mayonase one.

Incidently curry donuts are pretty good

I ate the rarest of beef I have ever eaten yesterday.

So rare, it was freshly killed and served at room temperature.

At least I know that in a survival situation i can punch an animal to death then feast without any preparation

Why do I keep getting myself into these weird food situations. New on the menu:

Ham and Egg donut - Not bad really. Like a jam donut with no sugar but filled with ham and egg goodness.

Natto - Natto is fermented bean curd. One of my japanese friends said many foreigners cant eat it. He was right. Strong taste, sticky as fuck and is so stringy it looks like your eating a web.

Horse Sashimi- Yep. I foolishly ate raw horse. It wasnt too bad but it was more the thought of it that was putting my off. It was quite weird that I only noticed after eating it the size of the blood puddle left behind.

Chilli Beer- This was pretty insane. Like normal beer but has had a chilli pepper waiting in its bottle for a long time. It was a night out in a bottle. Alcohol and the curry after.

Yamaimo- This translates as mountain potato. Its great when its roasted but a little strange when turned into paste to be poured over rice.

Imo sochu- This is like Sake but instead of being made with rice, it is made with sweet potato. It is like a cross between sake and paint stripper (the best way i can describre it)

When I eat/drink anything else that is unusual I will let you know. Also if you have heard of something I may be able to try I will look out for it.

The Japanese seem to have the idea that you do not need to cook tihngs before you eat them. Food poisoning is rare here. It seems to keep a lot of the goodness in and doesnt add any carcinogens. Japanese people seem to look a lot younger than westerners and i think food is one reson

They're right. Ancient man didn't cook anything in the days before fire and they seemed to survive okay. And I guess as long as food is fresh thentherisk of poisoning is minimal.

Japanese apples are the most delicious apples in the world. Woot! For some reason they are also bigger than any apples Ive seen in England.

Oishi!

Russian roulette takoyaki: Takoyaki is kind of fried octopus in batter. Russian Roulette Takoyaki is something you eat with friends where instead of octopus, it is filled with wasabi. I got the one that had been "tampered with". It tasted of...pain.

Isn't wasabei supposed to be one of the hottest things ever?

I seem to remember it being on Brainiac but lost the hottest food stuff to english mustard IIRC but then Brainiac isn't hugely scientific... Laughing out loud

there is a very thin line between good sashimi and good sex.

Wasabi should be used sparingly. It is friggin hot but it is different to chilli sauce because it doesnt linger. It just hits you. If you eat enough of it it seems to just slam straight inyo your nasal cavity. I refused to be beaten yesterday but I was not in my happy place. The tears came very quickly put it that way.

It troubles me when my friends over here talk about "organizing sushi girls"

i guess a good (tony-style as it involves people being hurt) analogy for those who hanv't tried both chillis and wasabi is that chilli based stuff is like being beaten up by a guy with boxing gloves, the pain(analogy hotness) isnt too great at the time, but the pain lasts a while after, even more the next morning. wasabi is like getting a paper cut, hurts a fuck load at the time but recedes relatively fast. you can always tell if someone has put far more wasabi than they thought on some shashimi, because they tend to shout whoa! then fall backwards.

i think im rambleing now.

long story short: wasabi is really nice but don't use to much at once. and shashimi and rice is very nice indeed. i want to go to little tokyo now. damn you.

One really strange thing is, at the moment in Saga, I have a mate that used to work at Little Tokyo in Leeds. He always said he found it weird because he was the only Japanese guy working there. On a similar note there is a guy I met in Saga when I first came here that is now doing a PhD at Leeds uni. Small world.

Also good analergies btw. My most recent wasabi experience however resembled more like a spike jammed into my nasal cavity rather than a paper cut.

Ok, new "experiences"

Wani Yakitori = Fried crocodile on a stick
Not bad. Tastes like both fish and chicken at the same time.

Fried Whale = Fried Whale
Tastes like fish but richer and somewhat, unethical.

Chalk up a few more edible species
