In their infinate wisdom, Microsoft like to tackle spam by silently blocking all mailings where similiar content is sent to more than 10 of their addresses. This means that it's virtually impossibe to sign up to a mailing list or a site that requires a verifiable e-mail address if you use a hotmail / msn / windows live e-mail address (hereafter referred to as hotmail). Well unless the people trying to communicate with you pay a large amount of money to Microsoft, or you whitelist a site in advance.

This means that you will most likely not see any of the verification e-mails this site sends out, and will be unable to recieve our newsletter if you try and sign up using hotmail account. This is not our fault, and you have been warned. We reccommend you use your University of Leeds e-mail account if you have one, or an account provided by a reputable service provider. It is also recommended that you whitelist all mail from the leedsrocksoc.co.uk, especially the automagic [at] leedsrocksoc [dot] co [dot] uk address.

If you have more problems signing up to the site you can Contact Us

P.S. Is it worth my manual mailing this out with varying subject fields?

No that won't work, I can, however, give you a list of people who have never logged in to the site since they registered , who also have hotmail addresses.

Read the 'register new account form, i think i spell it yout there, and link to this post

I've been getting emails to both my googlemail and hotmail accounts. I don't know if that information is of any use to you!

Do you have rocksoc explicitly whitelisted on hotmail? We know there is a problem with hotmail, so you may be at the top of the mailing list, I don't know which order things get sent in, or even whether there is an order other than what MySQL feels like.

Or the order that Microsoft's servers feel like.

I would be surprised if this effected registration, as all info i have received suggests that the 10 email limit is re set each day.

It certainly affects the newsletter and when groups/subscriptions are deployed may affect notification mails.

It is certainly known to cause problems for hotmail users of leeds.scifi.me.uk, I now get a phone call every time a certain user forgets their password. Additionally I have been flamed IRL by a number of people who believe it is best practice to delete all spam instantly, automaticly and irretreveably upon detection, who have then lost their verification e-mail.

This site no longer sends the initial password in an e-mail, but does check to see whether the e-mail address exists. This has improved matters some, but is entirely dependent on reCaptcha (the 'can you read these two words' test and distrubuted text recognition project) continuing to work effectively.

At the end of the day, this is a warning that there may be problems and not an order to not use microsoft's services.

Jay, should I move this conversation elsewhere and set comments closed on the announcement as it links form the registration page, and do i need to change/expand the message desplayed there?

Please do not use a Microsoft provided e-mail address when you sign up here, they cause problems.

Also should I move this conversation elsewhere and close comments on the annoucnement?

I'm guessing given that I registered with hotmail last year and not this year, when I was member 5, I will be at the top of the list (I'm guessing last year's list is still being used given I registered with googlemail this year)

I've checked my safe sender lists, and I can't see @leedsrocksoc.co.uk in either of them

If it goes in user order you are the 6th user on the list to have a hotmail address, Jay is 2nd. It strikes me that the people who aren't getting them are the people who don't know me well enought to complain. I'll extract a list of affected people and pass them to someone with enthusiasm.

Might as well leave comments and the conversation here intact, then people who see it can ask questions and read everything here.

I'll probably change my email address and give at least one more person a chance to get our emails, although if I set it to jay@leeds..etc (which forwards to my hotmail) will that make any difference?

Another thing, has it actually been confirmed by people who aren't as anti-Microsoft as The Register? As much as I'd like to believe it, I can't imagine they would do something as catastrophically stupid and user-unfriendly as this, they wouldn't have made so much money if they had absolutely no business sense at all...

I have to correct you there. El Reg is not just anti-Microsoft, its anti the entire IT industry. As for confirmation, the article does link to its sources, and it appearing 1) in 2 places and 2) in discussions between admins, it suggests some level of truth to the story. I guess the final confirmation is whether the person who gets the bounces gets the error message described.

If the filter works on content being blocked, using jay@leedsrocksoc will be useless.

I have emperical data backing this up. I dare not try and prove this conclusively this using any of MY accoutnts lest there be more problems. And I just can't be arsed to create myself a vast number of hotmail accounts. However if we can get more than 11 volounteers......

Confirmed: zillons of hotmail addresses bounce, /me has just found where all the 'undelivered' notifications were going.

There's also a number of uni addresses with non-existant departments (typo city baby)
