Greetings!

Have just been casually idling around the internet and was wondering if Leeds Uni still had a Rock Soc, or "Prog Rock Soc" as it was in my day!

Nice to see that it's still going!!

I was a regular to "Prog Rocks" (fortnightly discos) back in the late '80's and was indeed a member of the committee in 1990-91. The spandex and leather jacket has long-since gone off to the charity shop but I still have a lot of the old records which were the main collection of the Society.

Are there any other aged hangers-on still cluttering up the place?

Wouldn't mind an excursion over to Leeds (from York) one night with some other Leeds Alumni. We've all had kids, careers and alopecia to differing degrees and fancy getting back to our roots at least if only temporarily before our mid-life crises kick-in and our knees can't take it any more!!!!

With best wishes,

 Robin Rawson

PS Rock on!

PPS Christ! Sounds so cheesy saying that now!!!!

There was a society dedicated solely to prog? Frickin' sweet!

Hi Smiling

Forgot to mention....

Twenty years ago, Prog Rock was one of the biggest societies in LUU - bigger than Socialist Worker (do those gobby buggers still station themselves outside every lunchtime?) but second only to Ballroom Dancing! Good place to meet members of the opposite sex - or break toes!

There wasn't much "Prog" about it all back then! The glam/GnR crowd had just moved in but the Pres was a little chubby fella who had a passing resemblance for Keith Chegwin! In 1990 we merged with Leeds Met (formerly "The Poly") Rock Soc and had some really huge nights - filled the main refec hall to bursting!

 Later, all!

I don't think they do that, but they're certainly still opinionated and pushy. They put up posters everywhere about how the credit crunch proves that capitalism doesn't work! One of their most recent acts was to try to ban the military recruiting employees on campus, because they're anti-war; "recruiters of death" is what they called them. I just hope they're not so completely deluded that they have a problem with anyone wearing a poppy! Not that it'll stop me wearing one anyway!

Anyway, hi, I'm Rhiannon Smiling

Hi! I'm Adam. I'm an older member (though not that old) who's graduated and now works in Pudsey.

I'm one of the rocksoc 3rd year babies, although now i'm one of the older people. Thats worrying. Anyways i'm gonna run for President next year and my angle will be "Vote for me and i'll rename Rocksoc to ProgRockSoc".

I am bound to win by landslide. Everyone likes Prog.

(I thought i'd better mention that i do actually like Prog, i'm probably the biggest Rush fan in the society.)

They do, they're always outside the union...

I don't know whether to join them or hang them. I agree with their ideas, just despise their methods...

You never met a chap called Mike Embley! He was always thought of as the elder member of Prog Rock. I never let on that I was actually older than him!!!!

Leading straight on to this:

And I must say I agree.
Nah prog's ok. But it's weird to think of the rock soc being so old and once so huge! I don't know if there would be enough students into rock to fill the whole refectory these days.
Still, welcome (back).

Especially when you consider the dire straits it was in just a few years ago!

Interesting use of words for responding to "so old and once so huge"
