Since people seem to be complaining about doing DJ slots, and forgetting that the committee are mere mortals who do forget things ;p here is a thread so we can see who wants to be trained, and so people can see it is fair. Unfortunately it's too late for this month, and with it being monthly training is so very slow, but we will try our best Smiling

I wouldn't mind taking a shot as well, although I'm not too fussed if I don't get to do it

If you're not fussed then don't bother nominating yourself, we only have about 8 or 9 clubnights a year so fitting in the people suggested already will be difficult enough, let alone any freshers that want the opportunity.

Rhiannon would like to (though obviously it'll have to wait a year now!)

Probably not much point in telling us then, she'll have to make her request to next year's committee Smiling

You do realise that Tom won't be here next year, don't you? Laughing out loud

Yeah, so many people want to do it right now, I'll wait until they've all had a turn (although by then there may be so many djs from the sound of it that a training slot will be all I'll get to do!)

...I wouldn't have an attitude of "I'll wait until last" if I were you, as you have to remember that in a few months the queue will grow when the freshers find out, at which point you will never get a go...

Which is why I would like to take his place, my choice of songs would be very similar to those of Tom's and Neil's should I get a slot in the future

I'd just like to point out that the September training slot won't be taking place as we'll be going to Carpe Diem again beforehand and it's a little unfair to make someone train when everyone is arriving right at the beginning

the carpe thing worked well last time Smiling
I'm glad it's happening again

As I'm sure you've all realised, the October club night is coming up again and so we'll be back to our usual system of DJ slots with the half hour "training slot" at the beginning. Unfortunately, having a training slot each and every club night means that we have more and more people waiting to be chosen as DJs, and consequently more and more people being overlooked time and again. Because of this, I'm now proposing that instead of a "training" slot, we have a "guest" slot at the start of each night. The exact same process will apply - everyone in the society will be welcome to put their name down to play a DJ set between 9 and 9:30 and each month a different member will be randomly selected from the list in this very thread. The difference will be that those being trained cannot expect to have their name entered onto the regular DJ list. Obviously if someone blows our socks off they would be invited to come back, but for everyone else it's just more of a one-off opportunity that we want to be able to offer people. That way we can keep using the DJs we know and love and not worry about fitting everybody else in because we feel we have to, particuarly if the training slot didn't go well for one reason or another (and no, I'm not referring to anyone with that comment). The reason this needs to happen now is because when RockSoc only had a couple of people who could DJ it was fairly necessary to have more people training up each month, but now we're completely overloaded and there are still more wanting to have a go. Because I believe everybody deserves to have a go if they want one - we are here for our members after all - I don't like turning people down. However, this of course means that we have a lot of people trained up and not enough slots for them all, so something needs to change.

Now, I think it's also important to say that we'll be looking at the DJs we already have, because I can tell that anyone who missed out last year will be screaming at their screen right now and thinking that if they'd be trained a few months ago they'd be on the rota and now they can't be. The committee still need to discuss how we'll do this, but at some point we'll be sorting out who we (as a society) want for regulars, and so it won't mean that everyone trained in the past will automatically be asked to come back time and again. On the whole this could turn out to be fairly easy as obviously people like Miffy and Shreena are trained but won't be DJing anymore as there's that slight technical hitch of not being in Leeds, and hopefully all in all it will result in a better and more professional club night with sets that flow into each other and with DJs that read the crowd and play what wants to be heard, not just their own personal favourites.

Please don't lynch me at the pub on Friday!

I'd be more than happy to take a guest slot should I manage to actually be in Leeds at any point on a relevant Wednesday. But this doesn't look like it'll happen too often!

So we can start sorting this all out I just want to make a list of everyone that's been trained already. As far as I can remember, those people are:

Michael
Kenny
Stu
Neil
Gemma
Tom
Owen
Beckie
Ermy
Joel
Tim
Charles
Shreena
Jay
Alex

Did I forget anyone?

sounds good to me, as i've said before, just let me know when i'm needed Smiling

As far as that list is concerned, obviously Shreena, Gemma and Tom are not around to DJ this year. Is anyone else no longer interested? A lot of people trained a while ago seemed to stop coming into circulation but I want to make sure it's through choice and not through lack of being asked

On the subject of having a guest slot as opposed to a training slot, I think that that would be more my thing; I'm not particularly fussed about being a regular dj next year, but I'd still like to give it a go at least once at some point!

I'm now staying in France for an extra month, so the next club night that I would be able to come to at all will be the one in June. I don't suppose it's possible to request the guest slot for then now? Or would you prefer me to ask again closer to the time?

Just been looking at the June calendar (me being the loser that I am!) and I won't be able to dj in June after all, as it'll be on the 25th, my Mum's birthday.

Maybe next year?
