I'm surprised Daryl hasn't posted something about this but for once, I agree with his comments that came up on my Facebook Wall.
It's basically a Hi-Tech reworking of Dances With Wolves.
I mean, this really isn't the second coming of cinema we've been lead to believe it was.
Yes, it's very pretty and the 3D is acceptable (although to be honest, it was much more effective in both Coraline and Up), but wonderful design, eyecandy and some ok 3D does not make for a good film.
Call me old fashioned, but I'm rather fond of a decent script, a decent plot, stirling performances and something even vaguely original.
Avatar provides none of this.
The story is Dances With Wolves mixed with a bit of FernGully, Aliens and even a bit of Tron! Camerons stock characters make a tiresome return and I found myself checking my watch every few minutes not quite able to believing he'd had the gall to stretch this tosh out for 2 hours and 40 mins.
OKay, *technically* it's very good, I can't deny that, and design-wise it's truly beautiful. But I wanted it to be a good story with good acting, too. For me, this is sort of the essence of a good movie. Avatar failed on these pretty basic terms.
And don't get me started on a movie that suggests we go back to a simply and more eco friendly way of life via the medium of hugely complex technological fripperies.
Btw, if you watch it in 3D, it looks like a cartoon....
Not a favourite movie. Could you guess?
